The Opening Ceremony of KontraS Human Rights School for Students "Youth, Creativity, and Social Justice Movement"

By all means, KontraS has acknowledged the possible avenue in order to initiate a solid human rights school for the university students in order to establish a ‘playground’ of the youth human rights defenders. The students are expected to excel in human rights, elevate their skill, understanding, as well as profound empathy to interact with victims and the less fortunate groups in Indonesian society. It is important to recognize the 7th anniversary of KontraS Human Rights School for Students (SeHAMA), since its establishment in 2009. Approximately there are 210 students have joined and become alumni, involved and to some extent keep in touch with the human rights advocacy throughout the Indonesian archipelago.[detail]

Workshop for Indonesian Lawyers on Safeguards for Fair Trials in Death Penalty Cases

The Workshop was held in Jakarta, Indonesia, on 4 & 5 June 2015. The first day of the workshopexplored the issue of death penalty from the perspectives of international human rights laws and situated them in the Indonesian context. On the last day of the workshop, the participants were actively engaged in the strategic planning and drafting of follow up recommendations that serve as rough guidelines for the participants to kickstart a comprehensive, national campaign to abolish death penalty after the Workshop. In sum, the Workshop marked a milestone in the country's journey to end the practice of death penalty. It was first to produce a wide coalition of legal practitioners and CSOs spread across the country from Aceh to Papua, all united in a common goal to end death penalty in Indonesia.[detail]

Lobby to Embassies Regarding The Humanitarian Tragedy in Gaza

Our deep concern on the humanitarian tragedy in Gaza has led KontraS and our student network to take the initiative on lobbying several embassies to address the issue. We targeted to lobby some embassies which have the good political bargain on this issue, such as the member of United Nations Security Council (UNSC), the key negotiator of the Israel-Palestine conflict, and the member of Organization of American States (OAS).[detail]

The Second Regional Consultation on Contribution to the Review of The AICHR’s Terms of Reference

The Commission of The Disappeared and Victims of Violence (KontraS) attended the second Regional Consultation on Contribution to the Review of The AICHR’s Terms of Reference (TOR) on 27 & 28 June 2014, in Bangkok, Thailand held by the ASEAN Inter-Governmental Commission on Human Rights. As mandated by the paragraph 9.6 of the AICHR TOR, this TOR shall be initially reviewed five years after its entry into force for further enhancing the promotion and protection of human rights within ASEAN. Korean Human Rights Week in Jakarta “Speak Out! Silenced Voices in North Korea”

From April 28th to May 2nd 2014 “Speak Out! Silenced Voices in North Korea” is held in Jakarta to shed light on the dire human rights situation and to honor the millions suffering in North Korea. This event is organized by Citizens’ Alliance for North Korean Human Rights (NKHR) and co-organized by Indonesian Institute of Sciences (LIPI) and the Commission for the Disappeared and Victims of Violence (KontraS).[detail]

The Urgency of Indonesia to Ratify the International Convention for the Protection of All Persons from Enforced Disappearances

The issue of enforced disappearances has remained as one of the unresolved yet critical human rights issues faced by the Government of Indonesia for quite a long time. In the spirit of taking a step forward in finding the solution, on the 29th of March 2012, The Indonesian Coalition against Enforced Disappearances: Commission for the Disappeared and Victims of Violence (KontraS), Indonesian Association of Families of the Disappeared (IKOHI), Indonesian Law and Policy Study (PSHK), Human Rights Working Group, Indonesia Human Rights Monitor (Imparsial), Institute for Policy Research and Advocacy (Elsam) held a Public Seminar on the Urgency of Indonesia to Ratify the International Convention for the Protection of All Persons from Enforced Disappearances, in Jakarta, Indonesia.[detail]

Giant Letter to the Presidential Action

Kontras, IKOHI and families of victims of human rights violations and students sending "a giant letter" to President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, which contains a recommendation for cases of abductions and enforced disappearances of activists 1997/1998.
