Ex-government critic Ibrahim Zakir dies

INDONESIA: Former student activist Ibrahim G. Zakir died Saturday at MMC Hospital in South Jakarta, where he had received medical treatment for liver complications. He was 56.

Ibrahim, better known as Bram Zakir, was arrested following an anti-Japan protest on Jan. 15, 1974 along with other student activists.

He joined the group of anti-government critics Petisi 50 and joined the Commission for Missing Persons and Victims of Violence (Kontras) as board chairman of the human rights group’s foundation. Having survived lymphoma, he founded support group Indonesian Lymphoma Association.

Before campaigning for independent presidential candidate Rizal Ramli recently, Bram founded and led the now-defunct English daily The Point.

The co-founder of the RIDEP research institute was survived by his wife and three children. He was buried at the Tanah Kusir public cemetery in South Jakarta. -JP
