Human Rights School for Students (SeHAMA) 2009

The Commission for the Disappeared and Victims of Violence (KontraS) held its first-ever Human Rights School for Students (SeHAMA) this July 13 – 28, 2009. The school, made possible by support of the Canadian government, was attended by 29 Indonesian university students from Lampung, Palembang, Kendari, Cirebon, Semarang, Surabaya, Bali, Ambon, Papua and Jakarta.

The purpose of the human rights school is to spread ideas and discourse about human rights and test the students directly with practical work in the field. The other purpose was to increase
awareness of human rights, including building an interactive space to interact with victims of human rights violations. The human rightsschool was part of KontraS’ work in increasing awareness of human rights.

For the duration, the students learned directly to interact with each other while putting into practice human rights principles through: class discussions, field work, living in the victim’s community and meetings and visits to state institutions and human rights organizations, and by living together in the KontraS dormitory for the duration of the course. Some of the topics they studied included Human Rights in the Context of International Law, Introduction to Human Rights Advocacy, Introduction to Transitional Justice, and Introduction to Security Sector Reform. Participants also participated in dialogs with Kabul Supriyadi, a member of Indonesia’s National Human Rights Commission, Police Inspector General Drs. Nanan Soekarna, Head of the Public Relations division of the National Police, and Ikrar Nusa Bakti, LIPI. Other participants included Jonathan Prentice, UN Human Rights Advisor in Indonesia; Bambang Widodo Umar, Indonesian police expert; Lieutenant General Agus Widjoyo, former member of the Commission on Truth and Friendship (CTF), Musdah Mulia, ICRP and Asmara Nababan, former Secretary General of the National Human Rights Commission. Participants also visited the Canadian Embassy and received human rights material from John T. Holmes, the Canadian ambassador to Indonesia.

To get a sense of the victim’s view, partipants held a ‘live-in’ and field investigation in a community of victims of the May 1998 conflcit in Klender, a worker’s community at PT Istana Tangerang, a fishing community in Kali Adem, a group forced out during the eviction of BMW Park, and a street children group at Sanggar Akar Bantar Gebang. The students also interacted directly with victims of past human rights abuses, including victims of the 1965 violence, Trisakti and Semanggi incidents, and the Munir case, along with LGBT victims of violence, evicted communities, and victims of police torture. They also learned directly about the environment by visiting the Pulau Seribu (Thousand Islands) off the coast of Java. Participants also visited the Jakarta Legal Aid Institute to learn about human rights organizations. They also visited Yayasan Air Putih to learn about strategic communication using the Internet and other tools.

The course ended with a program on the night of July 28, 2009. Deepak Obrai, Secretary Representative of the Canadian Foreign Ministry, was present, along with the students and representatives from various human rights organizations. At the event, KontraS recognized two outstanding participants. The program was closed with music from the KontraS band and a spread of traditional food. KontraS’ coordinator said that he hoped the students, with the knowledge and experience gained over the last two weeks, would continue to disseminate human values wherever they are.

kapanpun dan dimanapun mereka berada.
