Kontras Asked Police to Publicize Sondang’s Letter

VHRmedia, Jakarta – Before setting himself on fire in front of the State Palace, 7 December 2012, Sondang Hutagalung wrote a letter for his girlfriend. Content of the letter written by the activist of Himpunan Advokasi dan Studi Marhaenis Muda untuk Rakyat dan Bangsa Indonesia (HAMmurabi or Association of Young Marhaenists’ Advocation and Study for Indonesian People and Nation) remains a mystery.

Komisi untuk Orang Hilang dan Korban Tindak Kekerasan (Kontras or The Commission for “the Disappeared” and Victims of Violence) intended to contact the police, to find out its content. "In the next future, we will come to and ask police department about the content of letter Sondang wrote. Before setting himself on fire, he gave a letter to his girlfriend, but the police was the first to lay their hands on it," said Coordinator of Kontras, Haris Azhar, Monday (12/12).

According to Haris, police has been acting weirdly since they are unwilling to give any information regarding that letter. "In our point of view, it is strange. Police is supposed to tell us (about the existence of the said letter). But, until today, there isn’t any information," said Haris.

Haris admitted, he didn’t see Sondang for the last two months. Before the self-immolating, Sondang came to Kontras almost every day.

"It had been two months before the self-blazing that he never came to Kontras. It is a question for us. Where and what had he been, that he suddenly appeared and set himself on fire," said Haris.

Haris is grieved over Sondang’s death. Sondang was committed and highly dedicated to fight for unsolved human rights infringement cases. "Although self-blazing was Sondang’s personal choice, we suspect that Sondang wanted to use his body to send message to this country, that human rights cases remains unsolved."

On 7 December 2011, Sondang Hutagalung, a student of Universitas Bung Karno, set himself on fire in front of the State Palace. Sondang passed away on Saturday (10/12), at. 5.45 pm, after getting medical treatment in Cipto Mangunkusumo Hospital.
