The Commission for Missing Persons and Victims of Violence (Kontras) on Wednesday renewed its calls for the Attorney General’s Office (AGO) to realize its promises to uphold the law on human rights.

The rights group gathered outside the AGO building in South Jakarta along with families of victims of past crimes against humanity to mark the AGO’s 49th anniversary.

“We are here to demand fulfillment of the Attorney General’s promises to follow up investigations conducted by the National Commission on Human Rights into various atrocities,” Kontras coordinator Usman Hamid said.

He said the incoming president had to guarantee that the attorney general would respond appropriately to investigations of past human rights violations so that perpetrators could be brought to justice.

“Otherwise, the president needs to consider a new figure [for the attorney general’s post], who has the courage and commitment to defend human rights,” Usman said.

Under the current administration of President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, the Attorney General’s Office had made no achievements in human rights protection, he said.
