Thousands of Labors to Hold Rally Tomorrow

VIVAnews – At least 10 thousand labors from Jakarta, Bogor, Depok, Tangerang and Bekasi (Jabodetabek) will conduct a long march from Hotel Indonesia roundabout to the Presidential Palace on Saturday’s Labor Day.

“We’ll be doing a rally in front of the palace until noon. This is not only for labors, but also workers,” the Indonesian Labour Union Alliance President Ningsih told reporters at Kontras’s office on Friday, April 30.

Before joining the long march, thousands of labors are also planned to hold another rally at the office of Manpower and Transmigration Department.

“We’ll be bringing a giant fake rat as the symbol of anti-social rulers,” the event coordinator, Anwar Maruf said.

The planned action will still be on although the government has urged the labors not to hold any rally on May 1.

“We’ve submitted a permission letter and announcement to the authorities. Tomorrow’s rally will be a peaceful one,” another coordinator, Hairun Usman said.

Usman also expected cooperation from the police by not restricting the demonstrators during the activity.

The labors will use the rally to propose several demands on labor exploitation practices such as the removal of low wages, the revocation of contractual work and the rejection of law against workers association establishment.

“Due to contractual work and outsourcing system, a lot of informal sector workers don’t have work assurance and protection. Bans on workers association have also been constantly increasing,” Usman said.

Jakarta Police said earlier that 15 thousand personnel would be assigned at several spots, including the vital objects, during the rally.
