13 Year Search for Missing 13 Persons

The case of kidnappings of activists that occurred in 1997-1998 was never completed. One person killed, 11 people tortured, 12 people were persecuted, forcibly removed 23 people, 19 people were deprived of physical liberty arbitrarily, and from forcibly removed 23 people, 13 people have not known his fate.

But out there, the perpetrators of this crime-free pitch, while families mourned the fate of abducted children and their husbands are missing like the earth swallowed. Number 13 then becomes a symbol of the struggle to find the people who until now has not returned.

“That symbol again remind us to SBY. He should remember that there are 13 people who have not been found and they represent hundreds of thousands of people who we believe to be removed by force during the New Order regime. The state must solve the case, stay SBY want it or not,” said the Chairman of Association of Families of the Disappeared (IKOHI) Mugiyanto.

The number of victims who are still looking for 13 people there. They are Petrus Bima Anugrah, Herman Hendrawan, Suyat, Wiji Thukul, Yani Afri, Sonny, Dedi Hamdun, Noval Al Katiri, Ismail, Ucok Siahaan, Hendra Hambali, Yadin Muhidin, and Abdun Nasser.

Besides referring to the number of people, number 13 also refers to the date of the kidnapping. Mugiyanto, never forget when he and two colleagues, Nezar Patria and Aan Rusdianto, Tim Mawar Kopassus was abducted on 12-13 March 1998. Mugi, Nezar, Aan and lucky. They were released, despite having a number of torture.

This year, even 13 years of dark events that occur. IKOHI proclaimed “G13: They’re Not Back”. G means the movement. “G13 is inisitaif us to again remind the government and the community because there happens to be the momentum of 13 victims, 13 March, and 13 years. Thirteen people have not come back until today,” said Mugiyanto.

Series of “G13″ runs from March 1 until March 13. IKOHI held a campaign in cyberspace, launching the album “They’re Not Back” by 13 bands and contains 13 songs. In addition, there is also no road show to various media.

IKOHI

IKOHI own form along the 13-year search of victims. It is the late Munir, founder of the Commission for Disappearances and Victims of Violence (Kontras), which initiated this kinship.

In 1998, when a number of activists known to be lost, along with a number of activist Munir Indonesian Legal Aid Foundation (YLBHI) seeking legal process to release nine activists, among them his own Mugiyanto, Desmond Junaidi Mahesa, Haryanto Taslam, Pius Lustrilanang, Faisol Reza, Rahardjo Walujo Djati , Nezar Patria, Aan Rusdianto, and Andi Arief. Meanwhile, other activists are still in search of a family with Contrast.

“In the process, victims’ families often meet. They come from several areas, namely Solo, Bangka, Probolinggo, Jepara, and more. Any advocacy, they gathered in the office of Contrast. Well, that’s where the initiative came from families of the victims is to form a kind of community. I’m not with them when they spontaneously set up IKOHI, “said Mugiyanto.

IKOHI managed to free Mugiyanto and eight other activists. At its inception, who became chairman is Raharjo Utomo, Petrus Bima Anugerah parents, one of the victims who lost to this day.

Circle the container that was initially gathered the family to share stories and encourage one another to transform into an organization that was tired of struggling to find 13 people who have not come back (read: We Actually Tired and Disappointed). Mugiyanto states, he and the victim’s parents determined to be the perpetrators of the struggle, not a passive victim.

“The victim must be doers of the struggle, not a passive object that stands behind and surrender to human rights institutions. Not like that, “said Mugiyanto firmly.

Not just fighting

However, in IKOHI, victims and their families are not just fighting. Moreover, they support each other, improve, and strengthen. Losing a family member leaves a bitter grief at heart. They were angry and disappointed. Some of them, including Mugiyanto, also a long traumatized due to the tragic incident.

“At that time friends of the Foundation Restored engaged in psychological services, who guided me and my friends, convey how important it is to restore the psychological condition of victims of human rights violations. According to them, people who suffered human rights violations such as people who just hit by a car running. At that urgent steps should be done is actually not force the victim to pursue perpetrators, but treat the victims first, and only after that fight. There is a psychological condition of victims who also need to be considered, handled and repaired, “he said.

Furthermore, in addition to psychological problems, economic problems also hit some families of victims. According Mugiyanto, some victims’ families came from lower middle class. They fought vigorously churned poverty despite their lives. In fact, he said, there are living on easy street just before the economic decline after the fateful event occurred. Some of them could not send their kids anymore because the foundation of life figure of the family disappeared at the hands of kidnappers.

“To this day victims of the economic problems remain difficult. But at least we in IKOHI still struggling with opening the cooperative and we have the victim’s family-owned shop in the office of Contrast. We also sometimes collect funds from the community to provide scholarships for some child victims. It should provide for our country who are victims of state action. This makes us even more disappointed, “he said.

When asked if that strengthens IKOHI consisting of the victim’s family to continue to fight in a variety of challenges, Mugi was silent. A few minutes later he sighed heavily and say, “One of the strengths of IKOHI is because it consists of survivors like me, victims’ families, and activist who became friends over the years. In my opinion, it becomes its own energy because we have direct relationships with family events and have direct relationships of people who loved the victim. That relationship, right, can not be broken and can not be lost. We always feel it. That’s our biggest strength, “said Mugi.
